The Conjuring: Last Rites Christian Review

There are horror films designed merely to scare, and then there are stories that remind us of the unseen war between darkness and light. The Conjuring: Last Rites is not just another chapter in the Warren case files — it is a chilling reminder that the devil is real, but so is God’s power.

The film follows paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren as they face their most disturbing case yet. Jack and Janet Smurl, with their family, move into what seems like a dream home. But their dream soon turns into a nightmare as the house reveals signs of demonic infestation. This is not the type of haunted house that creaks and groans — this is possession, oppression, and pure evil unleashed.

What makes Last Rites so gripping is not just the terror on screen, but the deeper spiritual battle it points to. As Ephesians 6:12 reminds us: “For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.” The Smurl family isn’t simply battling noises in the dark — they are battling the very forces of hell.

And yet, into that darkness, faith steps in. Ed and Lorraine Warren, grounded in their Catholic faith, confront the evil not with fear, but with authority given through Christ. Their weapons are not fists or guns, but Scripture, prayer, and the power of the cross. Watching them enter the house is like watching modern-day soldiers step into the battlefield of the unseen — and they do so knowing that God goes before them.

The title Last Rites carries a weight of finality. It reminds us of that sacred Catholic tradition of prayer over the dying — but in this film, it also speaks to something greater: that evil wants the last word. But the truth is, the devil never gets the last word — Jesus does. John 1:5 says it plainly: “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”

The Warrens’ journey is terrifying, yes, but it also stirs reflection. How often do we dismiss spiritual warfare as fantasy, when in fact Scripture warns us of it constantly? This film may entertain with scares, but it also teaches — reminding believers that vigilance, prayer, and discernment are not optional, but essential.

By the final act, the question isn’t whether evil is real — we know it is. The real question is whether our faith is strong enough to stand when darkness knocks at our own doors.

The Conjuring: Last Rites is more than a horror film. It is a wake-up call — that the battle is real, but victory belongs to Christ.

“The darkness wants the last word… but only the Light speaks forever.”
