Supernatural Christian Review

Let me preface this by saying I love a good story. Especially one that involves a classic road trip across America, throws in a healthy dose of monster-slaying action, and centers around the unbreakable bond of brotherhood. That’s the basic recipe that drew me into the world of Supernatural, the Winchester brothers, and their never-ending hunt for all things creepy and crawly. But as a Christian, I gotta be honest – Supernatural isn’t exactly your Sunday school picnic.

Here’s the thing: the Winchesters, Sam and Dean, are monster hunters. Like, their whole lives revolve around hunting down demons, vampires, shapeshifters – you name it, they’ve probably ganked it. And that’s where things get a little tricky for me.

The Family Business: A Double-Edged Sword

There’s no denying the show’s heart. The Winchester brothers would do anything for each other. They fight side-by-side, facing down literal hellfire and brimstone with nothing but a beat-up Chevy Impala and a whole lot of grit. That kind of loyalty, that fierce love – it resonates. It reminds you of the importance of family, even when that family is built on hunting monsters instead of backyard barbecues.

But here’s the rub: their family business was born out of tragedy. Their mom was killed by a demon when they were kids, setting their father, John, on a lifelong quest for revenge. Now, revenge isn’t exactly a Christian value (Romans 12:19). And while the Winchesters eventually graduate from pure vengeance to saving people, the whole “hunting the occult” thing still raises some eyebrows.

The Bible’s pretty clear about not messing with the occult (Deuteronomy 18:10-12). Demons? Not exactly God’s angels. So, while I can appreciate the Winchesters’ dedication, sometimes it feels like they’re wading into some seriously murky spiritual waters.

Heaven Help Us: A Different Kind of Heavenly Host

Speaking of murky waters, buckle up for Supernatural’s take on angels and heaven. Now, I’m a firm believer – angels are real, extensions of God’s power. But the angels in Supernatural? They’re a whole different kettle of fish. They have their own agendas, sometimes even fighting amongst themselves. It’s a far cry from the protectors and messengers we read about in the Bible.

This portrayal can be a little confusing, especially for younger viewers. It’s important to remember that Supernatural is a fictional world, and its take on heaven and hell might not exactly jive with Christian beliefs.

Lights Out, But Maybe Keep a Nightlight Handy

Let’s not forget the show isn’ t exactly sunshine and rainbows. There’s violence, gore, and enough creepy imagery to keep you checking under the bed at night. Don’t get me wrong, I can handle a good scare, but for some viewers, especially younger folks or those more sensitive to violence, it might be a bit much.

The Final Verdict: Buckle Up, But Maybe Pray First

So, is Supernatural a show for Christians? It depends. It’s a thrilling ride, full of action, heart, and a whole lot of monster-bashing. But there’s some baggage you gotta be aware of – the focus on the occult, the non-traditional portrayal of heaven and hell, and the violence.

Here’s my advice: If you do decide to watch, keep a critical eye. Remember, the true source of strength comes from God, not hunting demons. And maybe have a Bible handy to flip through if things get a little too creepy. After all, even monster hunters need a little faith sometimes.
