Planet Gliese Christian Review

Planet‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ Gliese is a voyage of cosmic fantasy — faraway stars, new planets, human nature’s incessant desire to go beyond Earth. The movie follows a space expedition in the future to a newly found planet that is assumed to be the solution of the survival of mankind. While seeing the movie, the words Psalm 8:3–4 came to my mind: “When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers… what is man that You are mindful of him?” To me the movie Universe, the size of which, according to the film, is mind-boggling, makes one naturally marvel and marvel is what the Bible says we should have for the Creator.

From the moral perspective, the movie deals with cooperation, bravery, sacrifice, and the heaviness of the leaders’ responsibility when their decisions influence the lives of the innocent. The characters are struggling with the survival decisions that weigh on their hands — who to rescue, what to leave behind — and thus they reflect Jesus’ words: “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.” (John 15:13) The most powerful ethical message in the film is the crew members’ readiness to give up their lives for the others.

First and foremost, though, Planet Gliese is spiritually a representation of a scientifically accepted view of the world. The film presents science as the means to salvation. Human intellect becomes the beacon of hope. There is no indication that God is the source of life or the creator of the universe. The stars impress the characters, but they are not worshipped. The substitution being made here quietly differs from Colossians 1:16–17, which points out that “by Him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are on earth.” Even the very fact of creation is not there to supplant God but to go back to Him.

The film is quite impactful on the visual level and can move the emotions, and the film’s mood is neither nihilistic nor cruel — it remains hopeful and emphasizes the importance of working together rather than being cynical. As regards family-friendliness, the film is halfway; the intensity of danger and complexity of the issues make it more suitable for teenagers and grown-ups rather than for kids.

In the end, Planet Gliese comes to be a contemporary example of the human longing: outwardly, we keep looking for salvation, but the Bible teaches that salvation came downward — in Christ. Space can make one stand in awe, but only God can satisfy the deepest human desire. Even today, the sky is revealing God’s greatness (Psalm 19:1) when films like this fail to acknowledge ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌Him.
