Not Without Hope Christian Review

Not‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ Without Hope has a title like that of a promise— and luckily, the story goes out of its way to keep it. It is a heart-rending survival thriller that follows a young man who is lost at sea subsequent to a calamitous accident. And his family and friends are left shouting prayers, looking for him, and putting their trust in God against unfathomable chances. As a pastor, I could not but see the film as a visual representation of Psalm 107:28-30, where God is the answer of the cry: “Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble, and He brought them out of their distress.” The sea is the place where the physical battle and the spiritual ordeal happen side by side as it is the clash of divine power and human frailty.

The film gets its power from the way it shows the reality of faith even when tension is high. Hope is not an element of the story, which has the characters simply be optimistic—it is rather the slow, unstable, and almost unnoticeable decision to rely on God even though the situation gives out a different message. The protagonists are fighting against despondency, unbelief, and the urge to cast in their lots with the adversary, thus they are a reflection of the scene from the Bible when Peter looked at the water and he sank, and then when he looked at Jesus and he was lifted (Matthew 14:29–31). The film is very familiar with this battle – faith as a delicate thing that is still there despite all.

From the moral point of view, it is a solid story. Love keeps the characters going. The ties with family members become even stronger. The giving of oneself turns into one of the main motifs thus it constantly reminds us of the words of Jesus: “No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” (John 15:13). The excellent traits of the characters do not only rise but also they do so naturally without the need of being forcibly inserted or being of the preaching type.

On a spiritual level, Not Without Hope is far better than several others on your list. Prayer is not absent. God is referred to directly. Faith is not something that is going on in the background – it is the lifeblood of the story. The characters that the viewers meet are even shown as physically dropping to the floor, calling on the Lord for wonders instead of relying on people.

The film is pretty much safe to watch for the whole family. The emotional part of the story may be too much for little children, but the nature of the content is still wholesome and uplifting.

Not Without Hope is very much like a boat steadying itself in a stormy sea – a storm that is full of nihilistic tales and has swallowed up whole the rest of the culture. The movie does very well in reminding the faithful of what is stated in Romans 8:24, “For in this hope we were saved.” Not to be just survivals of storms – but to go through them with the ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌Lord.
