Lone Samurai Christian Review

Lone‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ Samurai is a story told with very few words, but it conveys the concept of the solitary life, honor, and revenge from the perspective of the old warrior code of Japan quite powerfully. The story is about a samurai without a home who is a bit sorry for himself and, out of obligation, takes revenge, as that was the way he was raised. In the end, it presents a completely different world, but the inner battle that it portrays is the one that is closest to every human being’s heart. As a pastor, I kept relating the film to the Bible verse from Proverbs 16:9: “We may make our plans, but the Lord determines our steps.”

Each move of the samurai is influenced by the honor that he has sworn to. But, at the same time, it is very interesting to see that if honor is mixed with pride and lack of humility, it becomes a very dangerous thing. His own code of conduct is more about obtaining vengeance on the perpetrator than giving him a taste of his own medicine, and therefore, revenge becomes his ultimate goal. The Bible, however, advises us to do the opposite: “Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good…” (Romans 12:17–21). The film does not give its character any chance to become better. Instead, it depicts revenge as a solution, even if only the soul is hurt.

From a spiritual point of view, Lone Samurai is plentiful in metaphors but not accurate. The film shows different aspects of the faith such as meditation, ancestral shrines, and ritualized worship but none of them are pointing to the one true God. The samurai is calling on the God who saves, but that is not the One he is talking to. His faith is centered around the purification of the self rather than being saved. And the difference is very obvious—while Jesus put down His sword at the garden (Matthew 26:52), the samurai is holding on to it more tightly.

Morally, the film portrays its characters as being temperate, well-trained, and loyal. These characteristics are very similar to the biblical fruit of the Spirit—self-control and perseverance—but without Jesus, they are still not perfect. The main character desires peace but will, nonetheless, resort to violence to obtain it.

The film is full of brutal scenes and a depressing topic and, therefore, is not meant for children’s viewing. Nevertheless, the issue at the core of the film is still existent: the human longing for justice can very easily override the need for mercy.

The greatest takeaway from Lone Samurai is that, in the end, it reveals to us that not one single code, ritual, or blade is able to purify one’s heart. Only Jesus saves the part that honor never ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌could.
