Little Trouble Girls Christian Review

Little Trouble Girls is a quietly intense small-scale drama that leaves you uneasy and tells a story of fractured relationships, the revolt of youth, and the misery of growing up in a fragile world. It narrates the emotional breakdown, very relatable to the experience of the young girls, coming from the disintegration of their families and making choices whose outcomes are way beyond their comprehension. To me as a pastor, the very gentle and loving words of Jesus came in my mind: “Let the little children come to Me, and do not hinder them” (Matthew 19:14). The film is like a very loud silent plea not to underrate the pain of kids thrown into the middle of the neglect of those who should take care of them and the disintegration of their homes.
The morally portrayed plot is of quite an adult nature. The movie never shows the characters’ destructive behavior in a flattering light even when it depicts them. Instead, the filmmakers decided to reveal the effects that suppressed pain may have on a person’s life — sometimes anger will be the chosen way of venting, at other times solitude, and in some others the impulsive decisions. The link of this emotional realism to the holy book of Proverbs 22:6: “Train up a child in the way he should go…” is obvious and the unvoiced corollary to this, that without guidance there will inevitably be misdirection, is equally there.
Spiritually speaking, the girls whom God ignores are not even hinted to. They want to be safe, cared for, and find a home – according to The Bible, these are the things most abundantly given in God’s love. God, as described in Psalm 68:5, is “a father to the fatherless, a defender of widows.” The reality which would have brought so much power to the film if it was evident to everyone, is now just being emotionally rather than spiritually shared.
The family suitability is not great. Although the issues are adult, the way they are handled is more respectful than sensational. Mature adolescents, if accompanied by their parents, might emotionally get something positive from this film.
What comes to one’s mind first are the small gestures of kindness—the girls decide to be faithful rather than isolating themselves, loving instead of getting bitter. These little flashes of virtue are in line with Philippians 2:4: “Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.”
In the end, the film Little Trouble Girls is a soft cry for the loss of the childhood of the broken and a quiet reminder to believers: that the Church must be where the lost children find the compassion that Christ has always been the first to offer.
