Killer Clown Girls Christian Review

Killer‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ Clown Girls is a mess of horror-comedy and confusion — a genre that technically implies the existence of horrifying and wildly exaggerated violent incidents that are scary and awe-inspiring at the same time. Looking from the perspective of nature, it is one of the most clear-cut instances of films whose only purpose is to induce fright and deliver spectacle without any kind of moral or spiritual consideration. The very opposite of what film was telling could be read in the scripture “God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind” (2 Timothy 1:7).

The story is about the killings and the characters are monstrously exaggerated for the purpose of shocking the audience. With the help of visual means, the film changes the idea of evil into something spectacular — deeply unsettling, quite absurd, nevertheless, not provoking any kind of emotional response. While the movie is not directly showing crime and cruelty in a positive light (the villains are still villainous), it nonetheless glorifies the acts as something to be enjoyed rather than a tragedy to be mourned. Pain and suffering are provided here for the production of scares and laughs and not for the audience to reflect or repent.

From a spiritual point of view, the movie is empty. The darkness is brought in without an explanation, without consequences, and without a spiritual background. There is no mention of God, prayer, or redemption. The only reason for evil that the film gives is chaos — which differs greatly from the biblical worldview in which the darkness exists but is not without reason, and is always under divine authority. The statement: “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it” (John 1:5), is yet another example where the light never really comes into the story.

This film is definitely not fit for children. The inclusion of graphic horror elements, disturbing themes, and extreme violence completely rules out the possibility of the film being suitable for a young audience. Even adults looking for edifying entertainment may end up feeling spiritually drained after watching this film.

On a moral level, the movie doesn’t encourage wrongdoing, but it also doesn’t do anything to promote the good. The protagonists are there just to live through the ordeal — hardly ever to rescue, forgive, or sacrifice for the others. A few moments of cooperation can be found, but no great virtue.

Killer Clown Girls is rather a warning signal, indicating the direction, than a movie that you would recommend watching. It reminds us, believers, that we need to be discerning as to what we allow into our hearts. There are hardly any, if at all, take-home values in the film: “Above all else, guard your heart.” (Proverbs ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌4:23)
