Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire Christian Review

Okay, so Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire brings together the old and new Ghostbusters to deal with another big paranormal problem. There is a mix of action, comedy, and nostalgia, and yes, it is a little emotional too. But if you look at it from a Christian lens, there are some good things in this film, and some things that can cause some trouble.
First of all, the positives—the theme of family, sacrifice, and redemption is quite strong. The bonding shown between Phoebe and her mother is very consistent with Biblical family values (John 15:13—“The greatest love is to lay down one’s life for one’s friends”). Another good thing is that the story also has a message of fighting for others, which is reminiscent of spiritual warfare—Ephesians 6:12 tells us to stand up against the powers of darkness.
But this is Hollywood, and there will always be occult and spiritual deception in the supernatural genre. Throughout the movie, rituals, sorcerers, and a demonic entity play a large role—and honestly, this can be a little problematic, since the Bible says to stay away from occult practices (Deuteronomy 18:10-12). Another thing that may be a little problematic is the portrayal of ghosts. Here, ghosts are depicted as friendly, helpful, but according to the Bible, the concept of a person either going to heaven or hell after death (Hebrews 9:27)—entering the middle and roaming the world is not Biblical.

If we talk about the mature content, there is some bad language, a little suggestive humor, but nothing too shocking. There are just a couple of jokes which may seem cringy or unnecessary, but if you are used to watching Hollywood movies then you won’t find this to be anything new.
Overall, the movie is entertaining, there is a right balance of thrill and comedy, but from a Christian perspective, there are things to keep in mind. A little parental guidance may be needed for kids, especially if you are sensitive towards the occult and supernatural things. If you watch it, it can be a good opportunity to discuss what real spiritual warfare is like and why the Bible believes in occultism.
It is fun, but you have to watch it with a little thought!
