Ella McCay Christian Review

Ella McCay is a grounded, dialogue-driven drama that looks at politics not as a colorful show, but as something that the protagonist has to carry on her very human soul. Ella is a young woman who has been thrown into the leadership machinery and she soon finds out that ambition without a moral compass leads to dictatorship of the self. I cannot help but compare her experiences to the words of James 3:1which says, “Not many of you should be teachers, my brothers, because you know that we who teach will be judged more strictly.” Indeed, the theme of the work hinges on the idea that responsibility reveals character.

The narrative moves away from the aspect of power to concentrate on the solitude that power brings. Ella is not presented as a villain or a hero but simply as a humantorn between her own conviction and the demands of the public. The movie depicts in a very efficient manner how compromise infiltrates gradually, making one think of Psalm 146:3: “Do not put your trust in princes, in mortal men, who cannot save.” Political triumphs give rise to the illusion of happiness whereas the soul continues to long for something more.

On a spiritual level, the film chooses to be silent. There are no prayer rooms, no requests made to God, no Scriptures openly recitedbut the desire for wisdom is very clear. Ella is looking for guidance but she never really directs her gaze to heaven. The lack of this element is one of the most powerful sermons of the movie which it delivers unintentionally: human wisdom always has a limit, whereas divine wisdom is limitless.

Without doubt, Ella McCay displays more reflection and less recklessness. The style is of a mature and subdued nature, and it is appropriate for both teenagers and adults. The major virtue that is shown is conscienceElla through the film constantly hesitates before making decisions that would be advantageous to her but detrimental to others. That hesitation can be likened to Proverbs 4:26: “Give careful thought to the paths for your feet.”

What makes the movie connect with people is its source of the idea that leadership in the end is stewardship. The Bible teaches that God is the ultimate authority of all power (Romans 13:1). The movie never reveals that fact explicitly, but we do come to understand it by the end.

Ella McCay is a quiet yet very clear speaker: no power can save the soul, and success, by itself, cannot satisfy the God-given desires that rely on Him.
