Bunny Christian Review

Bunny‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ is one of those films that boldly enters the middle of the city’s messy life and doesn’t back down. The story takes place during the day and night of a single extremely hot summer day in the East Village of New York and it tracks street hustler Bunny and his friend Dino as they try to figure out a way to hide a dead body – the resulting gang of crazy, eccentric neighbors being involuntarily pulled into this adventure. To sum it up, the resulting work is a mixture of dark comedy and tragedy, and it is entirely human.

What we have here is the absence of any polish — just the raw catch of flawed people and a plot that in some mysterious way manages to depict both sin and survival as two sides of the same coin. From the point of view of ethics, the movie is situated somewhere in the middle of the gray spectrum. It does not, however, emphasize the evil side of things, nor, to a large extent, does it indict it. The filmmakers’ take is that it would be a very small number of people living the kind of existence where God is not present, and yet they find their own way to meaning — restlessness, loudness, and despair.

The movie’s language is clever but empty. Their characters in the film are always on the lookout for momentary relief, simple solutions, and the saving of their own skin. They giggle so that they are not able to crack, yet this very laughter hides deep emptiness – a reality that is compatible with Ecclesiastes 1:14:
“I have looked at everything that is done under the sun; it is all meaningless, a chasing after the wind.”

It is neither suitable for kids nor was it intended to be.

Nevertheless, among its tough exterior elements, there is this odd kind of lesson: sin can appear as disorderly, even as something to be laughed at, but it always ends in ruinBunny is not a film that shows the way to salvation, but it does make one feel the need for it. Upon the completion of the task, one feels the need for light in a place where the city appears to have lost it long
ago.
