Barbie Christian Review

If you have seen Barbie or not, then one thing can be said for sure, this film is more than just showing a toy brand. What Greta Gerwig has created is a colorful, funny, and slightly introspective ride that talks about our identity, gender roles and social expectations. Barbie’s world, where everything seems perfect and glossy, suddenly when the stereotypical Barbie (Margot Robbie) starts questioning her purpose and existence, everything shakes. Barbie’s existential crisis begins, and this takes her to the real world where she starts understanding herself. Ken (Ryan Gosling) also walks along and his journey is also very interesting as he gives a different perspective of patriarchy.

Now, if seen from a Christian perspective, Barbie is a good reflection of the struggle that we all feel in our lives. Our identity comes from our Creator, not from the norms and standards of society. Barbie’s questioning of one’s own identity highlights a crisis every human being experiences at one time or another — our worth is determined nowhere else, but only by God’s perspective. Meaning, whatever is your real purpose is not determined by the world’s expectations, but by the plan God has thought for you.

In Barbie’s world when there is matriarchy and women control everything, Kens struggle to understand their own worth. This is a good metaphor for how we sometimes get confused about our roles. Ken’s understanding of his strength, and his struggle in his relationship with Barbie, shows how important it is for all of us to respect each other and have equality. If we talk about Christian values, this is exactly what the Bible says – we all must respect each other, whether they are men or women.

Now, when Barbie meets Ruth Handler, who is the co-founder of Mattel, and she tells her that Barbie should not have a defined purpose, it is a very powerful thing. Because it is also connected to our faith, where we believe that our true identity and purpose is found only through God. Barbie going into the real world and going to her gynecologist – this is a symbolic moment. This tells us that it is important to accept yourself, understand your humanity. When you understand your true identity, then only you understand the true meaning of your life.

The tone of the film is light-hearted and vibrant, but the themes are quite deep. Like, when Barbie questions her identity, it represents everyone’s struggle. This film reminds us that our value, our self-worth, can only be understood from God’s perspective, not from the unrealistic standards of society. When Barbie’s purpose becomes clear, she wins her journey in a more authentic way.

But, the film can be a little mature at some moments. Along with the PG-13 rating, the film has some subtle jokes and references which can be a little uncomfortable for younger children. Like body image jokes and hints of sexuality – which are mostly comedic, but still seem a little mature.

The final conclusion is that Barbie is a good, entertaining and thought-provoking film that explores identity, gender roles, and societal pressures in its journey. From a Christian perspective, this film reminds us that our real worth is understood through the eyes of our Creator. The film also gives deep messages through its style, but parents should be a little cautious for their children as mature themes are also depicted. Overall, Barbie is an engaging film that opens up important conversations about self-discovery and purpose.

Rating Justification:
Barbie is given 4 out of 5 stars because it is a creative and engaging film that forces you to think about self-worth, gender, and purpose. But some mildly suggestive content and crude humor may make this film a little limiting for a younger audience.
