Apophis 2029 Christian Review

Apophis‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ 2029 is a story that delves deep into one of the scariest things humanity has ever concerned itself with: being wiped off the face of the earth. It is a story that begins with a near-Earth asteroid threatening the planet and goes on to reveal the different behaviors that people display, when they are faced with the possibility of their doom being near. Emotions go up and down as the dealine gets closer — from panic to regret, to reconciliation and ultimately to courage. Seeing this, as a pastor, I was very much reminded of Psalm 90:12: “Teach us to number our days, that we may obtain a heart of wisdom.” The movie softly agrees with the biblical statement — death has its way of giving one clear vision.

On ethics, the plot is quite convincing. In the face of such terrifying news, a lot of characters in the movie gave up their evil plans and chose instead to concentrate on love, forgiveness, and good works. The scenes of broken families making up and strangers being generous to one another instead of fighting for what little they have, evoke Luke 10:33–34, the spirit of the Good Samaritan — love shown in times of trouble.

The movie is almost entirely non-religious though. It depicts science as the only way out for humans. No prayer is shown. God is not sought after or even acknowledged. The characters in the film act like people who are dying without any connection to the One who lives forever. James 4:14 is directed right at this way of thinking: “What is your life? You are like a vapor that appears for a little while and then disappears.” The movie points out that man is weak and vulnerable but does not take the step of giving the hope that is found in Jesus and is eternal.

The degree of family-friendliness is average. The heaviness of the film’s theme and the disaster scenes may not be suitable for very young children but mature teens and adults can watch it and take part in discussions about it.

Apophis 2029 is a powerful demonstration of how the heart is laid bare in times of crisis. Fear strips away all the things that we mock as important but in fact, are trivial — love, forgiveness, reconciliation, are among the most important things to which it leads. However, as people of faith, we know that humanity’s greatest salvation is not from the likes of planetary defense systems. Real deliverance is in Christ alone: “The Lord is my refuge and my fortress.” (Psalm 91:2)

The movie comes with the offer to self-examine – however, it does not feature the One who provides unshakable calmness in the midst of ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌terror.
