Alien Wars: Judgement Day Christian Review

Alien‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ Wars: Judgement Day transports the audience into an otherworldly warzone of a sci-fi genre, in which the human race fights for its existence against alien invaders that are, at least on the surface, very powerful. In fact, the film borrows the term ‘Judgement Day’ from the most terrorizing and tragic biblical concept of all — the end of the world — but it only uses the idea for a grand visual effect and not for anything scriptural.

While I was watching this movie, the only thing that was in my mind was the reference to Hebrews 9:27, which goes this way: ‘It is appointed once for man to die, and after that judgment.’ In the Bible, judgment is not the aliens coming to destroy the earth, rather it is being subject to the one who judges – God.

The movie is basically on the side of good through the promotion of the brave and the united even if there is a pressure. To save their dear ones and even other people, the characters go through the dangers thus becoming the example of the sacrificial love which is the closest reflection to Jesus’ words: ‘No greater love has a man than this…’ (John 15:13) Though the moral backbone is there — bravery is evident, yet lack of spirituality is obvious.

Looking at it from a spiritual point of view, the narrative sidelines God and replaces him with chaos spreading through the cosmos. Human beings are shown as the only ones who live in a cold and unfriendly universe and they are the only ones responsible for their salvation. God is implicitly there – prayer is not mentioned – and the idea of going beyond and being accountable for something other than survival is taken away. This worldview is in sharp contrast with the Bible which states: ‘The Lord has set His throne in heaven, and His kingdom rules over all.’ (Psalm 103:19) No saviors from other worlds are coming – rescue, as per Scripture, is only in Jesus.

The level of safety for kids is quite low. The presence of sci-fi fighting, devastation, and apocalyptic elements makes this film fit only for mature audiences.

This film inadvertently presents the picture in Romans 1:21 where people, while imagining great power and huge cosmic mystery, fail to acknowledge the Creator. Space is played as being godlike, one of the characters expresses fear as the ultimate reality, and survival as the only meaning of life.

Number one, Alien Wars: Judgement Day becomes less attractive to Christian audience and more of a contrast to that group — it reminds us that biblical judgment is not scary because of the destruction, but because of holiness. On top of that, the Bible provides what this movie lacks: hope beyond fear. ‘Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.’ (Romans ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌8:1)
