The Street Avenger Christian Review

The Street Avenger is a film that follows the stereotypical vigilante cinema style: a man, usually after suffering some injustice, fights against the criminal world. Pacing with all these emotions, the film cries out in anger, determination, and grief. I, as a pastor, saw it and the tension was felt not only on the side of good vs. evil, but also on the side of justice vs. vengeance. The Bible tells us very clearly that it is a struggle: “Do not avenge yourselves… for it is written, ‘Vengeance is Mine, I will repay, says the Lord”” (Romans 12:19).
The hero’s suffering is relatable. He is a figure who stands for the many people who have been oppressed by violence or injustice and who want someone to take the matter in their hands and make things right. Moreover, there is something right in desiring justice — God Himself is the God of justice (Isaiah 30:18). However, the main conflict of the movie is in its solving: if justice without God is followed, the result is wrath. Violence takes the place of discernment. The hero turns into the one who judges and kills.
From a moral point of view, the movie is intricate. Although the bad things shown by the movie are true and disgusting, the hero’s actions are still violent and merciless. Jesus shows the way that is completely different: “Blessed are the peacemakers” (Matthew 5:9). The gospel doesn’t deny the presence of evil in the world — it faces evil with sacrificial love, not with retaliation.
On the spiritual level, the film is barren. There is no invocation, no request for God’s wisdom, no feeling of regret or reconciliation. Only more pain follows pain. The film accurately depicts the trauma of the spirit, but it never provides the healing- only the escalation.
The level of the movie being suitable for children is quite low. There is a lot of violence and the topics discussed are quite heavy, thus, it is not fitting for younger audiences. The constant aggression can be spiritually draining even for adults and in such cases, the film may not be enjoyable.
As believers in Christ, The Street Avenger turns into a mirror reflecting how different Christ’s reign is from that of the world. The real triumph, it is said, is not achieved by the use of one’s fists or firearms — rather, it is the fruit of surrender, forgiveness, and transformation. “Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit,” says the Lord (Zechariah 4:6).
The film is an exciting experience for the senses, but from a spiritual point of view, the film is a testament to the limitations of revenge: although it is capable of punishing evil, it will never be able to bring restoration to the soul.
