The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants Christian Review

It’s kinda old-fashioned good to go back and live again in Bikini Bottom. Search for SquarePants looks like a nice reminder to the world that happiness doesn’t have to be complex – sometimes it is just silly laughter, loyal friendships and seeing the world through the eyes of a child. I kept thinking of the words of Jesus when I was watching the movie: “If you do not change and become like little children, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven.” (Matthew 18:3) The movie is very much a childlike one and it does not deny it.
Once more SpongeBob’s ceaseless energy is the main point of the film as he sets out on a journey that is not about glory or power, but simply out of loyalty – the wish to save friendship and do what is right. Quite often his purity of intention is taken for stupidity, however, the Bible says “God selected the things that the world considers foolish in order to put to shame those who think they are wise” (1 Corinthians 1:27). There is something quite silent but very obvious in the Bible about the pure-hearted persistence of SpongeBob. He is the one to do it, but just because it is the right thing and not for the reason that he gets the praise.
From a moral point of view, the movie settles down positively. The themes are mainly around the concepts of teamwork, forgiveness, courage, and perseverance. Also, Squidward’s negativity and Plankton’s selfish scheming are funny characters that oppose this side of the story which is SpongeBob’s sacrificial friendship. In the end, Squidward’s selfishness loses its appeal while loyalty gets the upper hand.
On a spiritual level, God is not really there to be seen, but the values that are exhibited are very much in line with the teachings of Jesus: humility, joy, kindness, and faithful friendship. Primarily kids will even unaware of these truths, yet they are there, for example, Psalm 133:1 – “How good and pleasant it is when brothers live together in unity”.
This is really a good movie for the family to watch together. There’s no inappropriate content, no confusion in terms of spirituality – just the kind of laugh that comes from silly things and good, wholesome, heartwarming things, which the parents will have no problem in sharing with their kids.
Kelvin and the Search for SquarePants might not be an evangelistic tool, but it is a medium which shows the virtues quite in line with it and born from it: joyful faithfulness, unashamed hope and childlike love.
