Is This Thing On Christian Review

Is This Thing On? is a sweet and sad, very understated comedy-drama that touches on the issues of middle life reflection, burnout at work, and the desire to find again the meaning when life becomes empty. It is a story of a man who is caught between making fun of his situation in front of the people and feeling very discouraged in his private world, and is asking himself if his life really matters. While I was viewing it, this passage from Ecclesiastes 2:11 came to my mind: “Yet when I surveyed all that my hands had done … everything was meaningless, a chasing after the wind.” The spiritual dissatisfaction which is always present, although very quietly, between the film’s jokes, is what the movie is really about.
The protagonist is humorous, emotionally hurt, and inside very much in doubt — these three features, in combination, are recognizable to many of the Christian faith. His battle reflects the biblical truth that a good reputation or a successful career do not bring peace. Proverbs 16:25 is cautioning us: “There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way to death.” Without even mentioning God the movie shows this to be the case very clearly by presenting a character who comes to the conclusion that the applause is of little help in fighting his inner weariness.
On the moral side, the plot is more contemplative than daring. The jokes don’t involve hurting others and the emotional scenes are told in a very down-to-earth manner which reflects trust, relationship, and humility. These instances of the movie connect with the words of Paul in Romans 12:10 when he urges to “be devoted to one another in love.” The scenes featuring friends and family members are really affectionate and they reassure the viewer that the story is based on human kindness.
On the spiritual plane, it is quite a restrained movie. There is no prayer in the story, and Christ is not referred to, but the yearning for a reason to live is very clear. It is like a written sermon which ends just before inviting the listeners to come forward. The searching is there, but no Savior, the reflecting comes, but no redemption.
The degree of suitability for a family is average — those of age 15 and above and grown-ups can watch it, but younger children will probably find it too slow or emotionally difficult.
In the end, Is This Thing On? serves as a mild reminder to Christians: without everlastingly purposeful success, one’s life will be quietly empty. It is only in Christ that the human spirit can be truly and lastingly satisfied — “Come to Me,” said Jesus, “and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28)
