Merrily We Roll Along Christian Review

Merrily We Roll Along is not simply a musical film. It reflects on time, choices, and the delicate aspects of friendship. It is a story that is told backward and hence it slowly reveals the years, showing us only the layers of disappointment, compromise, and quiet heartbreak which chasing success brings to ones life. Being a pastor, this backward journey made an impact on my spiritual side. I can hardly imagine the words of Jesus, What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? (Mark 8:36), not coming to my mind.
The three friends whose lives the film charts are initially full of positive energy and have big dreams, but eventually they go their separate ways, the reason for which is ambition, jealousy, and unfulfilled expectations. The use of reverse storytelling here is quite figurative and almost resembles repentance whereby the characters are going back to the innocence they lost. There is something very spiritual about that idea. The Bible constantly urges us to remember, return and reconsider the paths we have taken. Consider your ways, the prophet Haggai says (Haggai 1:5), and this movie is an invitation for that.
Nevertheless, the film touches upon emotionally mature themes, includes some relational messiness, and the characters sometimes engage in moral compromise. These are not sins committed to a great extent, but the characters are portrayed in a manner that is quite complicated and might not be suitable for younger viewers. The imperfection of the characters helps us realize how the human heart can go astray very easily if it forgets where it came from, which is something that Proverbs warns against: Above all else, guard your heart. (Proverbs 4:23)
What it does really well is to affirm friendship, loyalty, and the bittersweet fact that choices make up character. Also, in the very last scenesactually, the very first onesyou can hear the voice of Ecclesiastes: Better is the end of a thing than its beginning. If we take this film as a reference, then the beginning of the story reassures us with the goodness that people have inside them before life puts them through its trials.
A touching, introspective film that communicates the following messages in a very soft tone: Walk wisely. Love deeply. Choose well.
