Mickey 17 Christian Review

So, I watched Mickey 17. Now, it is a sci-fi flick that tries to make something special by mixing space, life, death. But from the perspective of a Christian viewer, the deep questions that the film raises can be a little complicated to understand. Mickey is an “expendable”, meaning a crew member who comes in handy only when there are dangerous tasks. If he dies, his body is “renewed”, and nothing much is remembered. Now this idea is interesting, but it can be quite complex for those who want to understand the meaning of their lives.
I felt that when we start considering our lives “disposable”, in which direction are we going? Christianity says that every life is a precious gift. The concept of Mickey being “expendable” is exactly the opposite of that. This thing is very troubling, and the film explores it quite well.

First of all, the plot of the film is quite engaging. Mickey’s multiple deaths and then his rebirth can become a deeper metaphor of redemption and resurrection. When Mickey suffers, there is a little human feeling. We all struggle in some way or the other in life, and if you see this, then you get the feeling that Mickey is also struggling like us for his redemption. This concept is present in Christianity too, and Mickey’s journey shows the same in a way.
And the matter of human dignity and suffering is also highlighted quite well here. Mickey being expendable is a representation of a system where some people are treated only like tools. This is quite a troubling thing for a Christian, because according to our faith, every human being has dignity and value. It is absolutely wrong to exploit or consider someone as disposable, and the film highlights this very well.
Now let’s talk about those things which seemed a little disturbing. Mickey being expendable is a little more uncomfortable. The dark humor of the film tries to make light of this thing, but its ethical impact is a little deeper. We see from a Christian perspective, so it is important to value every human being, no matter how vulnerable he is. Mickey’s situation, where his life can simply be replaced, is a pretty tough pill.
Second, the moral boundaries in the film are quite blurred. Mickey has to face the situation of dying every time, and he is in a world where survival is the most important thing. Ethical questions sometimes take second priority. This is a bit problematic, because Christianity says always live by your values, no matter how tough the situation.
Rating: 3.5/5. Overall, Mickey 17 is a pretty solid watch if you like speculative sci-fi and philosophical depth. But from a Christian’s point of view, the questions raised in this film – about life, death, and dignity – are quite thought-provoking. The main message of the movie is that we should cherish our lives, and stand up against systems that exploit people.
If you want to do some serious thinking along with sci-fi, then definitely watch Mickey 17. But, this film will force you to think about the value and meaning of life, which every Christian should always keep in mind in his life.
