Heart Eyes Christian Review

Look, friend, Heart Eyes is an amazing mix – a little dark comedy, a little slasher horror, and a “whodunnit” mystery vibe. If you are watching it just for fun, you might like it. But as believers, we think a little more deeply about whether the things we are watching align with our faith and values or not.
The mystery angle of the story seems engaging. Just as the frailty of the world of couples has been shown, there is scope to think a little about how the meaning of love has become distorted in this world. It is possible that by looking at it in a different way we may reflect on God’s design for love.
The violence in the film is disturbing on one level. What about the glamorization of murder and white people? And the tagline – “Romance is dead” – gives a straight hopeless and cynical outlook on life. We know that real love comes from God – a selfless and sacrificial love (Ephesians 5:25-27). But this movie leaves us with a kind of despair, and the humour has a dark flavour – it trivializes human pain.

I would say that if you like dark humour and slasher vibes, this movie may not engage you. But as Christians, we must guard our hearts and minds against content that forces us to normalize evil. Every entertainment has an impact, big or small, and Heart Eyes does not show at all the hope and redemption which are the core of our faith.
If there is already so much brokenness and cynicism in life, then what is the need to consume more? It is more important to bring God’s vision of love and sacrifice into your actions. Real romance is the one that comes with hope and commitment – the one that Jesus showed on the cross.
