Lenox Hill Christian Review
Lenox Hill is a Netflix series, which makes for easy binge-watching. When I first started it, I didn’t what to expect I did know it was a documentary, and I knew that doctors were involved. I had no idea, however, how much it would put my heart in motion — something; that I thought could never be moved for any reason. In other words, this is not your average medical show. But it’s not a suspense drama with timed reveals or procedural buttoned-up endings. Lenox Hill is not that, Lenox Hill is so much more. As I watched it, I couldn’t help but see the connections to faith, to service, and to the way we’re called to love one another.
The Hands and Feet of Service
At its core, the Christian life is about service. We are called to serve others just as Jesus served during His time on earth. And let me tell you, the doctors at Lenox Hill Hospital are living, breathing examples of that kind of service. From neurosurgeons to emergency room physicians, these are people who have dedicated their lives to caring for others.
In a world that often seems to celebrate self-interest, Lenox Hill stands out for its focus on selflessness. It’s not a flashy show. It doesn’t need to be. It’s raw and real, and it shows the kind of sacrificial love that Christians are called to embody. These doctors are there, day in and day out, not just performing surgeries and diagnosing illnesses, but truly being there for their patients. And that, I think, is where the show really hits home for Christians.
We are all called to “love your neighbor as yourself” (Mark 12:31). Watching Lenox Hill, you see that love in action, in the hospital corridors, in the operating rooms, and even in those quiet moments when a doctor sits down with a patient to deliver life-changing news. It’s all part of a larger tapestry of care, woven together with compassion, empathy, and the kind of sacrificial love that mirrors Christ’s love for us.
Life and Death, Suffering and Hope
One of the things that Lenox Hill does so well is show the reality of life and death. There’s no sugarcoating it. Patients come in with dire diagnoses. Some of them make it; some of them don’t. And yet, through it all, there’s this underlying thread of hope.
Now, from a Christian perspective, this is incredibly powerful. We live in a world where suffering is a reality, but as Christians, we also believe in the hope that comes through Christ. Watching Lenox Hill, you see both sides of that coin—the suffering and the hope. There are moments that are incredibly difficult to watch, but there are also moments of pure, unfiltered joy. It’s a balance that reflects the human experience, and it’s a balance that, in many ways, mirrors the Christian walk.
What’s fascinating is that the show never explicitly talks about faith. It doesn’t delve into the religious beliefs of the doctors or patients. And yet, the themes are there, plain as day. The sanctity of life, the importance of community, the need for love and compassion in the face of suffering—it’s all there, woven into the fabric of the show. And as a Christian, it’s impossible not to see the hand of God in all of it.
Everyday Heroism
One of the things that struck me most about Lenox Hill is how it portrays the doctors as everyday heroes. And here’s the thing—these aren’t superheroes. They’re not perfect. They make mistakes. They have doubts. They get tired. But that’s what makes them heroes in the truest sense of the word.
The Bible is full of stories of imperfect people being used by God to do extraordinary things. Think of Moses, who doubted his ability to lead. Or David, who fell into sin but was still called a man after God’s own heart. In Lenox Hill, you see that same kind of imperfect heroism. The doctors are human. They have flaws. But they keep showing up. They keep doing the work, day after day, because they know that what they’re doing matters.
In many ways, it’s a reflection of the Christian journey. We’re not perfect. We stumble, we fall, but we get back up and keep moving forward, trusting that God is using us, even in our imperfections, to make a difference in the world. And that’s exactly what these doctors are doing. They’re making a difference, one patient at a time, in ways that often go unnoticed, but that have a profound impact on the lives they touch.
The Emotional Weight of It All
Here’s something that really sets Lenox Hill apart—it’s not just about the medical procedures. Yes, you see surgeries and diagnoses and all the things you’d expect in a hospital documentary. But what makes this show different is the way it delves into the emotional lives of the doctors and the patients. You see the toll that this work takes, not just physically, but emotionally and spiritually as well.
And this is where, I think, the show really resonates with Christian viewers. Because as Christians, we understand that we’re not just physical beings. We’re emotional and spiritual beings as well, and the work we do, the lives we live, affect us on all those levels. Watching Lenox Hill, you see the doctors wrestle with the emotional weight of their work. You see them carry the burdens of their patients, and you see how that weight affects them in their personal lives.
There’s something deeply human about this, and deeply Christian as well. We are called to carry one another’s burdens (Galatians 6:2), but we also know that we can’t do it alone. Watching these doctors, you get the sense that they are bearing more than they can carry on their own. And while the show doesn’t explicitly mention faith, it’s a reminder that we all need something bigger than ourselves to help us carry those burdens. For Christians, that’s where faith comes in. It’s a reminder to pray for those in the medical field, to lift them up, and to acknowledge the incredible emotional and spiritual weight they bear.
Final Thoughts
In the end, Lenox Hill is a beautiful, heart-wrenching, and deeply moving tribute to the doctors who dedicate their lives to caring for others. It’s a reminder of the sanctity of life, the power of compassion, and the everyday heroism that takes place behind hospital doors.
From a Christian perspective, it’s a show that will resonate on multiple levels. It’s a call to love and serve others, a reminder of the reality of suffering and hope, and a testament to the power of community. It may not be overtly religious, but the themes of faith, service, and sacrifice are there, woven into every episode. And for that, Lenox Hill is a must-watch.
Rating: 9/10. It captures the heart of service and the humanity of both patients and doctors, but a deeper exploration of faith in the face of suffering could have made it even more profound.
